Non-Ionizing Radiation
Margaret, we've been "regulating" non-ionizing radiation at the University
of South Carolina for about 10 years. We have an electronic products
subcommittee of the radiation safety committee that establishes policies
and reviews enforcement actions. We cover lasers, microwaves and
ultraviolet light.
Our laser safety program is rather extensive. We keep an inventory of
all lasers at USC. We inspect the Class 3 and Class 4 lasers yearly for
compliance with ANSI Z136. All laser operators must take a computer
based training course before commencing work. They must also submit
to an eye exam offered by our Occupational Health Nurse.
At one time, we surveyed all microwave ovens on campus but we now
have too many ovens. We survey upon request.
Concerning the laser program, our researchers have been very
supportive and cooperative. If you would like additional information,
