Re: Rad damage to teflon and PTFE

There are a series of reports from CERN giving radiation damage test
data. The one I have is :

Compilation of Radiation Damage Test Data
Part 1: Cable insulating materials
H. Schoenbacher and A. Stolarz-Izycka

CERN 79-04
Health and Safety Division
June 18, 1979

Unfortunately, the only information on damage of Teflon PTFE and FEP
given therein is:

"Severe radiation damage occurs at doses above 10**3 Gy for TEFLON PTFE
and 10**5 Gy for TEFLON FEP"

Also, the American Composites Manufacturing Learning Center,
425 California Ave
Stuart, FL 34994
1-800-258-6653, or (407)288-9996, FAX: (407)288-9997
issued a report (including many references):

Design Reference Charts for Composites, Plastics and Other Materials
Used in High-Energy Radiation SSC and Other Accelerator Environments
John J. Morena
September 22, 1993

This report gives a suggested maximum radiation level for TEFLON PTFE as
10**3 rads.

I hope this is useful.
