POSITION TITLE: Physical Science Technician (Dosimetry)
                GS-1311-06/07

The program plans to make two (2) selections from this
vacancy announcement.

AREA OF CONSIDERATION:   Open to all Sources (Status
and Nonstatus) - If a list of eligible candidates is
requested from OPM, all nonstatus candidates who meet
the minimum requirements will be referred to OPM for
rating, ranking, and referral.  All status candidates
who wish to be considered under both merit promotion
and competitive procedures must submit two (2) complete
applications.  When only (1) application is received,
it will be considered under the merit promotion
procedures only.  

LOCATION: Radiation Safety Branch (RSB), Division of
Safety (DS), Office of Research Services (ORS),
National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of
Health and Human Services (DHHS)

The positions are located on the main Bethesda,
Maryland campus of the NIH.  The individuals hired must
have valid driver's licenses in order to drive between
the main NIH Bethesda campus and the six off-campus
facilities of the NIH.  Travel out of the Baltimore-
Washington D.C. area may be required occasionally.

Duties: The incumbents of the position would be
assigned to work with one of the three sections within
RSB.  The RSB provides essential field services,
including health physics consultation, surveillance,
investigation and various technical services to NIH
investigators.  The incumbents would provide support in
many of the RSB's duties, including packaging outgoing
shipments of radioactive materials in accordance with
appropriate regulations, inspecting incoming shipments
of radioactive materials, handling radioactive waste,
calibrating counting equipment, and preparing and
analyzing samples for radioactivity.  The incumbents
would conduct radiological surveys in a variety of
areas such as a research laboratory, patient room,
animal care facility, and radioactive waste areas.  The
incumbents would access data from a computer database
system, and would create technical reports using the
information accessed and basic word processing.

The incumbents would also have further technical duties
depending on to which RSB section the incumbents are
assigned.   

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  At least one year of
specialized experience equivalent to the next lower
grade level.  Specialized experience is experience
which is in or directly related to the line of work of
the position to be filled and which has equipped the
candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and
abilities to successfully perform the duties of this
position.

One full year of graduate education or an internship
that is directly related to the work of this position.

                              OR

A combination of specialized experience and education.

1.   Knowledge of regulations, terminology, and safety
     procedures involved with the use of radiation and
     radioactive materials under a U.S. Nuclear
     Regulatory Commission license.   

2.   Ability to communicate with Health Physicists, NIH
     researchers, and ancillary personnel in polite and
     professional manner, exercising tact and
     diplomacy. 

3.   Ability to plan, organize, and prepare technical
     radiation protection reports using a computer for
     word processing and data management.  

FOR APPLICANTS APPLYING FOR THE GS-07 LEVEL
1.   Knowledge of regulations, terminology, and safety
     procedures involved with the use of radiation and
     radioactive materials under a U.S. Nuclear
     Regulatory Commission license.

2.   Ability to communicate with Health Physicists, NIH
     researchers, and ancillary personnel in polite and
     professional manner, exercising tact and
     diplomacy. 

3.   Ability to plan, organize, and prepare technical
     radiation protection reports using a computer for
     word processing and data management.  

4.   Ability to work independently after proper
     training and direction.

HOW TO APPLY:

WHAT TO SUBMIT:
1.   A current copy of your resume, OF-612, SF-171, or
     any other written format you choose.

2.   A copy of your most recent final rating under your
     appraisal system.

3.   Responses to KSA's.

4.   Certificate of Release of Discharge from Active
     Duty (DD-214) if claiming a 5-point Veterans'
     Preference or Application for 10-point Veterans'
     Preference if claiming 10-point preference, and
     the documentary proof needed to prove your claim.

5.   Copy of most recent SF-50 (Notification of
     Personnel Action) showing either your highest
     grade achieved or competitive status for
     reinstatement eligibility.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Before hiring, an agency will ask you to complete a
Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your
suitability for Federal employment, to authorize a
background investigation, and to certify the accuracy
of all the information in your application.  If you
