I've give this reference several times before, so please excuse the
repetition. A review of the current state of food irradiation is presented
in the May 1994 issue of _Food Technology_. Several articles appear on
pages 124-144, bibliographies are included. According to one of these
papers, "Status & Prospects of Food Irradiation", by Paisan Loaharan,
p130 (?) "...in early 1992 the first commercial food irradiatior in the
U.S., Vindicator Co., Mulberry, Fla. went into operation...." If
interested, you might give them a call.
According to this article, the most common irradiated foods are spices
and vegetable seasonings. The text of this article and a figure given
differ on the quantity of irradiated food. The text states that 20,000
metric tons of spices were irradiated in 1992, but the figure is
labeled in millions of metric tons.
