???Chernobyl Health Effects; Dosimetry -Reply
In reference to cleanup workers not wearing dosimetry at
Chernobyl, I sat through a presentation given by a Russian
geologist who works with their HLW program and who had
been to Chernobyl to study the "Chernobyl glass." As he
talked about moving freely about some of the most
contaminated areas and through very high radiation fields
(>1 rem/hr according to his presentation) I asked two
questions:
What kind of anti-c clothing did you wear?
What are your dose limits?
His response was something to the effect that they would
usually wear an extra set of clothes over their street clothes
and remove them before leaving. As for dose limits, he said
that he generally left his dosimeter at the hotel because he
would exceed his limits and wouldn't be able do further
research (he mentioned being fired if he exceeded his limits
but didn't give what the limits were).
