Call For Papers

Please find below a first half of the "Call for Papers" (CFP) for the
next HPS midyear meeting in San Jose, CA. This provides info on the
topic of the meeting. The remainder of the CFP is a form and does not
come out well in ASCII format. It would not be suitable for submission
of abstracts and therefore is not included. If you are interested in
submitting an abstract, please contact our secretary, Rosemary
Wedding, and request the original CFP, which can be either faxed or
mailed to you:

HEALTH PHYSICS OF RADIATION
GENERATING MACHINES

January 5 - 8, 1997
San Jose, California

CALL FOR PAPERS

The 30th Midyear Topical Meeting of the Health Physics Society, Health
Physics of Radiation Generating Machines, will be held January 5 - 8,
1997, at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, California.

San Jose is located in the heart of the Silicon Valley. As part of the
metropolitan web surrounding the San Francisco bay, it offers an
eclectic mixture of high technology, gastronomy, rich cultural life
and sightseeing opportunities. Additional popular destinations, such
as the Monterey Bay, Santa Cruz and the Napa-Sonoma wine country, are
all within driving distance.

The Mid-year Program Committee invites members of the Society and
other interested persons to participate. The program will consist of
both oral and poster sessions. Authors of poster presentations will
have an opportunity to briefly introduce their work during oral
sessions. Each session will include both invited and contributed
papers. ABSTRACTS MUST BE RECEIVED BY JUNE 14, 1996.

Major input to the technical program is expected in the areas of
accelerators, medical applications, industrial applications and
research, with emphasis on shielding, dosimetry and radiation
protection methods. The following is a non-exhaustive list of possible
topics:

Proton, electron and heavy ion accelerators of low, medium and high
     energies ...
  Synchrotron radiation applications ...
Conventional diagnostic X-ray procedures, special medical
     procedures, radiation therapy ...
  Dosimetry and monitoring instrumentation ...
Industrial applications, X-ray sterilization, X-ray polymerization
     ...
Research machines, fusion and confinement devices ...
Advances in shielding design, Interlock/Safety systems,
     environmental impact, training,...

Papers on any additional topics describing health physics aspects of
some radiation generating machines will be appropriate for submission.

Author Eligibility

Any Health Physics Society member may submit an abstract. Non-member
submittals are welcome, but require member sponsorship (not
necessarily co-authorship). The name and signature of the sponsor must
appear on the Abstract Form in the designated space. Non-members, who
have difficulty finding a sponsor, may submit their abstract without
sponsorship - such abstracts will be sponsored by the Program
Committee.

Submission of Abstracts

Abstracts should be submitted to the Mid-year Program Committee to be
received by June 14, 1996:

1997 Midyear Abstracts
HPS Secretariat
1313 Dolley Madison Boulevard, Suite 402
McLean, VA 22101

Questions may be addressed to Vashek Vylet at (415) 926-2048 (e-mail:
vylet@slac.stanford.edu) or to Lutz Moritz (e-mail:
lmoritz@afsmail.cern.ch).

Acceptance of Abstracts

A person may present one poster and/or one oral paper (there is no
limit on coauthoring). Notification of conditional acceptance or
rejection of the abstract will be mailed to the presenting author by
the end of July, 1996. Final acceptance of the paper will be
contingent on receipt of a written paper by October 1, 1996. The
Mid-year Program Committee expects that papers will have the support
of the author's management prior to abstract submission.

Publications of Proceedings

Proceedings of this meeting will be published and distributed at the
time of the meeting. Manuscripts from both the oral and poster
presentations will be included in the publication. Instructions for
preparation of manuscripts will be mailed with the letter of
acceptance. Completed manuscripts must be received by October 1, 1996.

Presentations

For oral presentations, only high-quality 35-mm slides or overhead
transparencies will be acceptable. The Mid-year Program Committee
reserves the right to preview slides/overheads and to reject those
that are not of acceptable quality.

Instructions for preparation of both oral and poster presentations
will be mailed with the letter of acceptance.
