(Fwd) Re: Hoods for Iodination

Here's another response to your questions, regarding iodination hoods -
1. Prefilters and HEPA filters help extend the life of nuclear grade (TEDA)
charcoal. It is important to use prefilters and HEPA filters in an
expensive
(BAG IN / BAG OUT) filtration systems. For a 1" or 2" inexpensive ($125-
$300)
charcoal system, the prefilter and HEPA filter would be a waste of money!
2. The best way to test a charcoal filter is with an air sampling system.
Many
users utilize a sample pump with an in-line filter cartridge holder. A 47mm
charcoal filter paper or a 1" thick cartridge can be used for this
function.
The flow rate should be approximatley 11 lpm or greater (up to 2cfm max)
depending on the size duct, flow rate, and collective efficiency of the
sample
media. Atlantic Nuclear supplies a complete sampling system for $695.
3./4. Most users sample the exhaust from the hood for radioiodine during
iodinations and for several days later. It is also a good idea to reduce
the
flow of air through the charcoal system/hood when it is not being used for
iodination. This prevents migration of the radioiodine and charcoal
depletion
from other contaminants.
5. The filter system air flow should be designed (according to charcoal
manufacturer) for 1/4 second retention time through the charcoal or 20
ft/min
for a 1" thick filter, 40 ft/min for a 2" filter, etc.
NOTE: ATLANTIC NUCLEAR supplies iodination hoods of all price ranges...from
$1195, including filter and fan to a $12,000 hood with a $7895 BAG IN/BAG
OUT
filtration system. They also do custom work with stainless steel,
galvinized
metals, lead, etc.
