Re[2]: Beta Skin Dose question
I believe the actual experiments were actually performed at Battelle.
Try these documents
EPRI TR-100048
PROJECT 3099-2
April 1992
"Threshold Levels for Nonstochastic Skin Effects from Low Energy
Discrete Radioactive Particles.
EPRI TR-102658
PROJECT 3099-09
October 1993
"Nonstochastic Skin Effects from Discrete Radioactive Particles
Emitting High Energy Spectra Beta Rays"
I have a draft of the following document that was also sponsored by
EPRI.
"Skin Injuries from Discrete Radioactive Particles and the
Implications for Nuclear Power Plant Radiological Control Practices"
This was a summary of EPRI experiments conducted at Battelle Pacific
Northwest Labs.
There was even a draft industry proposal that may have been issued
throuth the NEI to set the limit for hot particle to 200 micro-Ci that
seem to come out after the final review by the persons in Texas of the
EPRI experiments. I have heard nothing since.
As far as pigs go, they are a good test subject with skin that is not
too dissimilar from our own. It appears that the pigs had 50 or more
sources on them at one time; most likely to get good statistics. The
pigs look a little like Bonnie and Clyde after they met up with the
law... Of course, a few small piddly scars never hurt anyone...
See if you can chase down Jim Durham somehow. I believe he may have
been involved in some of the experiments and he is also responsible
for writing the new revision of Varskin. He is an excellent source of
knowledge. He is last known to still be working in the Battelle area,
but not directly in skin dose research.
I believe the HPS summer school may cover some skin-dose related
topics.
Good luck

Jim
NCRP 106 will answer all of your questions in sufficient detail or
refer you to more than you would probably like to read on the subject
in a year.
Good luck.

I am an Instructor at a Nuclear Power Plant and I've heard rumors of a
study done at Texas Tech? in which high activity particles were placed
on pigs in order to determine the total acute dose at which the
earliest non-stochastic effect could be detected. Is anyone familiar
with this study, and can you tell me the effect and doses involved?
Also as an aside I'd like to know the reasoning behind the use of
pigs.
Thank you.
