Radiation Safety Technician Position Available



RADIATION SAFETY TECHNICIAN  (4203B)  Environmental Health & Safety Services

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech)

Inspects laboratories involved in radioisotope and X-ray equipment usage for
compliance with University, State & NRC regulations.  Removes radioactive
waste from laboratories and properly packages waste.  Provides emergency
response assistance.  Receives and delivers new packages of radioactive
material.  Participates as a member of a continuous process improvement team. 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  Valid driver's license, Associates Degree  in
sciences or related area or equivalent training and experience; working
knowledge of radiological principles and operational characteristics of
radiological equipment; demonstrated skill in operation of radiation
detection and measurement equipment; ability to weigh factors in decision
making process; effective oral and written communication skills;  good
mathematical ability;  ability to safely move and handle 45 lbs. unassisted;
some knowledge of computers and software. 

WITH PREFERENCE GIVEN FOR:  Working knowledge of radiation standards and
regulations; experience maintaining mechanical, electrical, and electronic
equipment; experience in a technical position; working knowledge of
computers and software; familiarity with the Virginia Tech campus;
experience in radiation safety or laboratory experience involving
radioactive material.  FULL-TIME POSITION.  Position ends on 6/30/97,
renewed yearly. Application deadline:  July 12.
