Gulf Nuclear & Nuclear Chicago

Radsafers:

Whatever happened to Gulf Nuclear, Inc. and/or Nuclear Chicago? We have a
number of old neutron sources from these companies that we want to get rid
of. There are both Am-Be and Ra-Be sources ranging from 5 mCi to 3 curies.
Most of them are old soil moisture/density gauges.

I talked to Los Alamos and got on their list, but their proposed program to
take Am-Be sources probably won't happen for another 2 to 8 years. Troxler
can help us with their own instruments, and I sent the list out to other
disposal companies for estimates.

I want to explore all options in order to put together a proposal to
dispose / transfer these sources. I'm tired of using our skimpy budget as
an excuse to stockpile radioactive materials which will never be used. It
all depends on one's interpretation of the "R" in ALARA, I guess.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
