Raffinate usually refers to the tails left behind when something is refined,
i.e. there is a product stream and a raffinate stream.  I've seen the term
used in several chemical/mineral processing settings.  Just a guess, but it
wouldn't supprise me if the term comes from "riffraf", which means rubble.
