                When we set up our thyroid bioassay program, we 
          focused the measurement to be the actual thyroid burden. 
          By using predetermined or "blank" backgrounds you can 
          overestimate the thyroid uptake due to the fraction of 
          the iodine remaining in circulation. We take a 
          background on the thigh of the individual. This 
          measurement somewhat approximates the neck/thyroid 
          tissue structure and volume. By subtracting this value 
          from the thyroid count the actual thyroid burden can be  
          calculated and a dose assigned.
