We have been using the SAIC AP-2 to perform isotopic identification in
the field. The AP-2 is a hand-held alpha spectrometer.
It has an LCD display and will show a 128 channel alpha spectrum. The
spectrum may also be uploaded to a PC and the spectrum then analyzed with
tools such as MS-Excel.
The data output from the AP-2 is NOT directly usable by the PC, however.
It outputs the data in a 2 bit flipped hex if I remember correctly. In
any case, if you choose to use the AP-2, I have a C program, that I
adapted from a program provided by SAIC, that will convert the AP-2
output to a text file ready for spreadsheet analysis and graphing.
