RE: E-Link: Major Breakthrough in Hazardous Cleanup Process

I read an article in a popular magazine (sorry, can't remember which one)
about a similar process 2-3 years ago. The author complained that the rad
protection people he'd demonstrated the process to were skeptical of the
process. Apparently a demonstration was given using a small Co-60 source.
After being run through the process there was no activity detectable where
the source had been, thereby supposedly proving the system worked. However,
there were no air samples or surveys of the device and exhaust gas systems
downstream of the chamber allowed by the demonstrator. I would suggest that
if the apparent half-life goes from 300 years to 100 years, it's because the
longer-lived nuclides are being exhausted to atmosphere or collecting in
some other part of the system downstream of the reaction chamber.
