More Greepeace intervention

SANTIAGO, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- The environmental group Greenpeace said
Monday it was organizing protests at Chilean and Argentine ports
against a possible shipment of plutonium around Cape Horn.
The group said a French ship could choose that route to carry
reprocessed nuclear fuel from France to Japan for use at nuclear power
plants.
The environmental protection organization said the demonstrations
would be carried out simultaneously at Punta Arenas, in southern
Chile, and the Ushuaia port in Argentina.
Greenpeace said the ship could make the trip around the southern tip

of South America within the next few weeks and demanded that nations
involved in the nuclear industry provide citizens with more
information on the use and transportation of radioactive materials.
Greenpeace's flagship, the Rainbow Warrior, is currently sailing in
Chilean waters.
The organization said it was ``calling on the people and governments

to be alert in the face of this new threat...and demanding that the
ship with nuclear waste not pass through the Magellan Strait or the
Panama Canal.''
Greenpeace also referred to the recent accident involving a Mars-
bound Russian space probe that crashed somewhere in the Pacific region
last month.
The Russian Embassy in Bolivia said last week that there was a chance

radioactive debris from the craft hit the ground in a sparsely
inhabited area of Bolivia, near the Chilean border.
The 6.8-ton ship was carrying four coin-sized generators containing
about 7 ounces (200 g) of plutonium.
Greenpeace said the incident was an example of the need for more
stringent international policies on nuclear safety.
