security of radioactive material

Research laboratories requiring more that one mode of egress under
NFPA 45 prohibits having doors locked between labs; ie. the researcher
in an adjacent lab will then have only one means of egress, their main
door, rather than two. How can radioactive materials, radioactive
waste, bench top experiments, etc... be secured from removal if these
doors cannot be locked and freezers/refrigerators are not locked, and
waste containers are not locked, etc... Anyone else having a problem
with this, particularly in the university research arena? How have
you handled this and how has your inspector reviewed the security
issue with the labs ? Is the concern on the source material and/or
waste containers, and experimental setups ?

thanks
