IAEA definitions;

EXEMPT WASTE
Activity levels at or below clearance levels which are based on an annual dose
to members of the public ob 0.01mSv

No radiological restrictions.

LOW & INTERMEDIATE LEVEL WASTE (LILW)
Activity levels above clearance levels and thermal power below 2kW/m^3

SHORT LIVED LILW
Long lived alpha emitters less than 4kBq/kg in individual waste packages and 
less than an overall average of 0.4kBq/kg per waste package.

Near surface burial minimum required.

LONG LIVED LILW
Long lived radionuclides concentrations exceeding limits for SLLILW.

Geological disposal facility required.

HIGH LEVEL WASTE
Thermal power above 2kW/m^3.

Geological disposal facility required.
