DOE Internal Dosimetry Documents

DOSE-NETTERS,

There are three draft documents from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)
that should be of interest to those doing internal dosimetry. First, at

aftord-23>

you'll find the new draft Implementation Guide (IG) entitled, "Internal
Dosimetry Program," DOE G 441.3-1 (formerly G-10 CFR 835/C1), January
1997. This IG, somewhat analogous to a U.S. Nuclear Regulatory
Commission Regulatory Guide, gives guidance for meeting Title 10, Code
of Federal Regulations, Part 835, "Occupational Radiation Protection."

At

you'll find two documents:

The Proposed DOELAP Bioassay Standard applies to analyzing bioassay
samples, and draws heavily on ANSI/HPS N13.30.

The Proposed Internal Dosimetry Standard supports the Draft Internal
Dosimetry Program Implementation Guide by providing detailed examples
and references to other standards and useful documents, such as the
technical basis manuals for internal dosimetry of the various DOE
National Laboratories, which contain a wealth of detailed technical
information.

Both the IG and the Proposed Standard are based on the work of the DOE
Internal Dosimetry Expert Group (IDEG), originally convened in 1986
under Ken Heid (PNNL). That group was later chaired by the late Roscoe
Hall (SRS), then by Rick Brake (LANL), and most recently, Don Bihl
(PNNL). Members and contributors that I know of included Don Bihl, Jim
Bogard, Liz Brackett, Rick Brake, Gene Carbaugh, Bill Fairman, Roger
Falk, Darrell Fisher, Judy Foulke, Roscoe Hall, Ken Heid, Dave Hickman,
Bill King, Tom LaBone, Jim Lawrence, Ed Lessard, Bob Loesch, Gary
Mansfield, Dave McLaughlin, DeVaughn Nelson, Jim Neton, Gene Potter,
Mario Schillaci, Jack Selby, Dan Strom, Monte Sula, and Al Tschaeche.
The IDEG was initiated at DOE by Ed Vallario, and later supported at DOE
by Ken Ferlic and Rick Jones.

In my opinion, the DOE and the taxpayer will benefit from critical
review of these documents by all who are interested.
