Re: X-Ray vision is here
The system that everyone has been discussing the past week is
actually manufactured and in use. It is produced by Nicolet
Imaging Systems of San Diego. An informative web page may
be seen at the following URL:

The following information was taken from Nicolet's web page on
the Secure 1000 system for those who are unable to get to the
web page.
Best regards to all

The Secure 1000 is a nonintrusive personnel screening system designed to
detect contraband materials concealed under a person's clothing.
The system is capable of detecting the following metallic and organic
materials:
•Conventional weapons, firearms and knives. •Precious metals, wires and
keys. •Plastic weapons, explosives and ceramics. •Packaged narcotics,
drug paraphernalia, paper currency and other organic materials.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
General Description:
The SECURE 1000 is a turnkey nondistructive personnel screening system
that is safer and more cost effective than pat-down searches. In just
seconds, concealed contraband is easily detected on individuals who are
screened.
Unlike metal detectors, SECURE 1000 is capable of locating even tiny
amounts of metal such as jewelry, keys, coins, wires and precious
metals. In addition to showing the size, shape and location of these
metallic objects, the system can simultaneously locate and detect
conventional metal weapons, high-tech plastic and ceramic firearms,
explosives, illegal drugs, precious metals, cameras, recording devices
and other contraband or security threats.
A narrow, low energy x-ray beam is scanned over the body surface. The
reflection or backscatter of the beam is detected, digitized and
computer stored. The data is then enhanced, using state-of-the-art
imaging techniques to create a display of the person and any concealed
objects.
The SECURE 1000 is superior to metal detectors in three significant
ways:
•Nonmetallic objects can be detected. •The size, shape, and location of
the offending object is clearly shown. •The system can detect much
smaller amounts of metal as well as different forms of metal including
solids, powders.
The issues of Safety:
•Each full body scan of the SECURE 1000 produces approximately 3
microREMs of emission. This is equivalent to the exposure
every person receives each five minutes from naturally occurring
background environmental radioactivity.
