The California Radioactive Materials Management Forum (CalRad
Forum) will hold its' Annual Spring Conference May 15 - May 16 at
the Mesa Pavilion Hilton, Mesa, Arizona.

The preliminary program includes a newly offered and
well-received workshop on media relations for radiation safety
officers and others in medical, teaching and pharmaceutical
settings. This Thursday afternoon workshop is very valuable to
those who routinely deal with radioactive materials and want
become more confident dealing with the media about waste issues.
The National Low-Level Waste Management Program offers these
workshops free of charge and attendance at the CalRad Conference
     is not required.

Thursday evening includes a reception and dinner at the nearby
"Rockin' R Ranch Cowboy Dinner Theater."

The Friday formal conference program begins at 8:30 am and
concludes about 4:30 pm. The focus of this years Conference is
"Ward Valley: Action or Inaction? Will Politics Continue to
Outweigh Sound Science?" California is the only state to have
issued and successfully defended a license for a new low level
radioactive waste disposal facility as required by the Low Level
Radioactive Waste Policy Act of 1980 and the Amendments Act of
1985. Transfer of land from the Federal Bureau of Land
Management remains the only significant obstacle. Speakers
representing the state and federal government, the Southwestern
Compact Commission, the developer and radioactive material users
will address the political, institutional and legal issues.
Practical approaches to low level radwaste treatment will also be
     presented.
