Those Sr-90 eye applicators are calibrated in terms of 'contact' dose
rate. There is a fair amount of variability in terms of dose rate per unit
activity, so I suspect the theoretical approach is just as good for
shipping purposes as any number for a particular source (assuming that the
construction of the particular source is not peculiar in some way so as to
reduce the dose per activity factor).
