This very subject was discussed at some length last year on RADSAFE. There
were numerous responses on good demonstrations for kids (and adults) of
varying ages. For those of you who have a relationship with school
teachers but don't have the time to go to the schools you may want to set
the teachers up with a set of the DOE publications for teachers. They are
entitled "Science, Society, and America's Nuclear Waste". You can call the
Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management at 1-800-225-6972. For
those of you who have never been to a school to talk about nuclear "stuff"
I would highly recommend it. I do it on a regualr basis and kids are much
more open minded than they would have you believe.

My employer denies that I produce coherent thoughts,
much less ones that they would endorse.
How can those of us who are out here, working hard at reagular jobs, get an
entre' to the schools to do special presentations for them - and how can we
get good materials that will help us - as most of us don't have a lot of
free time to put together the kind of attention grabbing demos that kids
expect today - do an attractive and scientifically sound presentation -
adjustable to meet the needs of different levels of background educaiton
and developmental readiness? I would LOVE to have the chance to make a
difference at the elementary, middle and high school level... And I think
(a dangerous exercise) that we "professionals" can make a difference by not
being so removed from the public. Of course I'm always a little nervous
that someone might ask a question I can't answer in an understandable
way....
