HPS meeting in San Antonio----" Radiological Protection inLatin America"



A special session entitled " Radiological Protection in Latin America" is to
take place on Thursday, July 3, 1997 from 8:30 AM to Noon during the
HPS meeting in San Antonio.
The session will have very qualified speakers from Latin America cover
topics from Regulations to Radiological Incidents. If you are attending the
meeting, plan to attend the session.
The agenda is as follows:
Ing. J.Raul Ortiz-Magana, Gerente de la Comision Nacional de Seguridad
Nuclear y Salvaguardias of Mexico (the NRC of Mexico) will speak on
"The Regulation of the Use of Radioactive Materials in Mexico".

Health Physicist Patricia Zuniga-Bello  who spent  5 or 6 years with the
International Atomic Energy Agency and who dealt extensively with
radiation protection programs in Latin America will speak on " Industrial
Gamma Irradiators in Latin America".

Health Physicist Adelia Sahyun of the "Instituto de Pesquisas Energeticas
e Nucleares (IPEN/SP)" of the "Comissao Nacional de Energia Nuclear
(CNEN)" of Brazil will speak on the "Distribution of Radioactive Materials
for Nuclear Medicine Use in Brazil".

Rafael Hurtado-Monroy M.D. a Specialist in Hematology,etc. etc. of the
Hospital Angeles del Pedregal in Mexico City,  a collaborator in the
REACTS Oak Ridge courses, and an expert on the treatment of victims of
accidental irradiation will speak on the treatment  of three patients from El
Salvador who entered an irradiator cell containing about 100,000 Ci
Co-60 when the source rack was stuck in an unshielded position. He will
also speak on the radiological incident that graces the cover of the HP
Journal of march 1997 which involves an extremity exposure to an
X-Ray beam from an X-Ray Diffraction unit.
