Re: Total Dose from Mars Travel
NCRP Report 98, Guidance on Radiation Received in Space Activities,
estimates, for a 3y mission (2y roundtrip, 1y on Mars) a total of roughly 1
Sv (100 rem) to the blood-forming organs (BFO). This includes doses neither
from any onboard sources, nor from solar particle events.
The breakdown is 0.9 Sv in space, assuming 2 g cm-2 aluminum shielding, and
0.12 Sv on Mars, given 10 g cm-2 carbon dioxide shielding by the atmosphere.
