Description: Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center Radiation Safety
Office is seeking an experienced and motivated individual to join its
team of health and safety professionals as a Health Physicist. This
highly visible and responsible position will assist in the development,
implementation and maintenance of a large-scale broad-license radiation
safety program. The successful candidate will assist with the control
and minimization of risk involved in radiological hazards, assuring that
the safety and compliance requirements are met for the use, storage,
shipping, receiving, transport and disposal of radioactive materials for
the CPMC and NYSPI licenses and permits. The work involves a wide range
of duties associated with an academic/medical broad license.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to, surveying nuclear
medicine, medical and analytical x-ray facilities, and radioisotope
labs; conducting ALARA reviews and investigations and calibrating
instruments; managing waste; personnel monitoring, source leak tests and
providing computer support for the RSO. Supervision and training of RSO
technical staff and providing radiation safety training to employees
including technicians, nurses and maintenance personnel. Individual will
plan, schedule, and conduct supervisory inspections of
University/Hospital facilities using and proposing to use radiation
sources in a broad spectrum of clinical and research applications. The
individual selected will serve as Deputy Radiation Safety Officer for
the Medical Center's cyclotron for radiochemical and radiopharmaceutical
production including ensuring compliance with New York State Department
of Environmental Conservation Permit for the discharge and disposal of
radioactive material to the environment.
Work is performed under the general supervision of a Radiation Safety
Officer or Assistant Radiation Safety Officer in the Radiation Safety
Office. Qualifications: Position requires an MS in health physics,
medical physics, or physics, and two year’s progressive experience in
applied health physics; or an equivalent combination of relevant
education and experience. Excellent verbal, written and personal
communication skills are required. Computer support and project
management skills, including ability to manage and develop RSO
management software and the RSO Website, are also highly desired.
