Dear collegues,

Thank you for your responses. Thanks to you, who provided me with an
explanation how this word has come into being. 

I knew the meaning of "stake", I knew combinations like "burn at the
stake", which probably is a punishment which some groups might like to
introduce for persons not being wholeheartedly opposed to nuclear power
(sorry for my sarcasm....), and I knew that stakes played a role in
claiming an area during the various gold rushes. But now I know that
everybody who thinks to have an interest in whatsoever is a stakeholder. 

I appreciate this experience, which also shows that scientists in our field
are not one track minded, but are for instance interested in the history of
words. I
especially appreciate the humor of Dewey Burbank, though he obviously is
not joking by putting forward all the stakeholders concerning Hanford. He
admitted that his collection of stakeholders might not be exhaustive - if
Greenpeace reads his contribution you might face stakeholders from Europe,
Asia, Australia.......
