Greenpeace halts U.S. coal shipment to Ontario

The foolowing article is very interesting, in that Greepeace is now 
attacking coal as a source of energy. I suppsoe they'll be attacking 
solar energy next (once the 5 see the ":light"!!!  .. which leaves 
very few alternatives for the future...

TORONTO, Oct 6 (Reuter) - Members of the environmental activist group
Greenpeace on Monday stopped a ship from unloading coal at a suburban
power plant, saying increased production would lead to harmful levels
of pollution. 

Draped in a banner reading, ``Coal Kills, Go Solar,'' five people
chained themselves to a coal hopper used to transport coal into the
storage facility at the Lakeview Thermal Generating Station in
Mississauga, just west of Toronto. 

Greenpeace spokeswoman Alison Turner told Reuters the group was
protesting plans by provincially owned utility Ontario Hydro to
increase ``the use of coal to replace the energy output lost by the
closure of seven nuclear reactors this year.'' 

Turner said the coal being shipped from Pennsylvania via Ohio would
allow the generating station to increase its productive capacity by
about 400 percent. 

Ontario Hydro spokeswoman Lois Wallace confirmed plans to increase
output at Lakeview, but said the 400 percent figure was misleading
because the plant had not been running at full capacity before news of
the reactor shutdowns. 

She said the delay in unloading the coal ``is costing us a lot of
money,'' and added that Ontario Hydro had no idea what the protesters'
intentions were. 

Wallace said police had not been called in to deal with the
protesters. 

The utility announced plans in late August to shut down down seven of
its 19 nuclear reactors and replace their production with output from
plants fired by fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal.
