Sorry I did not express it clearly.  The K-40 reduction is not an important
consideration in shielding.  It is, however, important in reducing the internal dose
and the dose from the medium immediately surrounding the test organisms. 
Tritium, C-14, and other naturally occuring radionuclides in the medium also
contribute to the dose, but if nothing is done about K-40, the dose reduction will be
limited to about a factor of two.
