Regarding your question on how to get an ANSI standard:

They're very nice, but they take money. I believe you can also get a free
catalog of all standards they make, and references to ISO standards.
They also have a web site with ansi.org or something like that in the
name. You won't find copies of ANSI standards on the web very often,
because ANSI has a jealously guarded copyright - and rightly so, but that
doesn't mean it's all that convenient.
