Re: Diet to counter acute radiation dose?
General supportive care (good nursing, diet, fluids, etc.)
can maintain patients exposed to acute whole-body radiation
while their bone marrow recovers--assuming the dose was
sublethal. Patients getting therapeutic radiation to the
upper GI tract (mouth, throat, esophagus) have difficulty
eating because of the mucositis and depressed taste
perception. Imaginative diet is very helpful in such cases.
There are no cures for acute radiation injury (with the
possible exception of bone marrow transplant in patients in
a very limited dose range).
