The main reason is to improve the index of refraction; rare earth oxides have been used for this for years, even in sunglasses. We reviewed and puplished a report and recommendation on the radiation "risk" aspects of this to the eye some 25+ years ago, but I forgot where we published it, except that there is now an ANSI standard. mgoldman@ucdavis.edu
