Use Caution with DOE/EH-0071
RADSAFERs (and those of you who are reading this by mistake . . .)
In his reply about SAR dose calculations, Scott Sorensen suggested:
"10 CFR 835.2 references the use of Federal Guidance Report No. 11 (EPA
520/1-88-020) in its definitions of ALI and DAC. I would look here
first. DOE also provides another source for DCF in "Internal Dose
Conversion Factors for Calculation of Dose to the Public (DOE/EH-0071,
1988)."
I would caution the readers that I have found errors in the older DOE/EH-0071
(can't remember exactly what, sorry, but I believe it was with one of the
transuranics.) It is my understanding that the DOE/EH-0071 values were
derived from FGR #11, so best to go directly to that report (until, of course,
the new one comes out!)
Don't mean to step on Scott's otherwise fine reply. And, Scott's point about
the "magic" shift from acute doses to committed doses is well taken. With the
current EPA PAG of 1 rem CEDE, we are going to evacuate cities, or at least
shelter in place, for roughly an additional 20 millirem per year for 50 years
(for transuranics.) Something to think about folks . . .
