*** Japan governor nixes entry by British nuclear ship
A Japanese regional governor barred a British freighter carrying
nuclear waste from France from entering a port in his prefecture
Tuesday. The Pacific Swan, carrying 24 tons of nuclear waste, was
standing about a mile off the northern Japanese port of Mutsu-Ogawara
waiting for a row over its entry to be settled between Gov. Morio
Kimura of Aomori Prefecture and the Tokyo central government. The
freighter is carrying nuclear waste recycled by France's state-run
nuclear firm Cogema. It left the French port of Cherbourg in late
Jan. and was scheduled to unload its cargo Tuesday morning. See

*** EPA cites violations at N.Y. nuclear plant
The Environmental Protection Agency said Monday it found violations
of clean air and water laws at a nuclear research plant on Long
Island, N.Y. The EPA cited the federal Department of Energy for the
violations at its Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, N.Y.,
which has a history of pollution problems. The violations were
revealed through an inspection of the lab that began last May and is
ongoing, the agency said. Earlier this month, a former scientist at
the plant charged that residential drinking water may have been
threatened by radiation, but the laboratory's top official denied the
charge. See
