Call for members



The Utility Radiological Safety Board Citizens Advisory Council is soliciting applications for membershipfor two year terms starting July 1, 1998.  The members of the Citizens Advisory Council are an organized voice that ensures the URSB member agencies are aware and responsive to the needs of the citizens of Ohio.  The mission of the Citizens Advisory Council is *To advise the Utility Radiological Safety Board of Ohio on measures and factors affecting the safety of existing nuclear power facilities, including, but not limited to plant design, operations, management, emergency planning, public health and environmental impacts, and regulatory standards and policies.*

The Citizens Advisory Council meets four times a year, or more often as needed, and consists of local government officials, academics, representatives from environmental organizations, scientists, nuclear and health professionals, citizens residing near the nuclear power plants, and students.  Except for the student members, who serve one year terms, the members of the Citizens Advisory Council serve staggered two year terms.   The staggered terms serve to maintain balance and continuity on the Council.

The Citizens Advisory Council is specifically looking for members to fill the following positions:

  A citizen member from the Davis-Besse Evacuation Planning Zone (living within 10 miles of the plant), knowledgeable in nuclear power issues and/or nuclear power plant emergency procedures, or willing to learn;

  A local elected official from the Beaver Valley Ingestion Planning Zone (within a 50 mile radius);

  A local elected official from the Davis-Besse Ingestion Planning Zone (within a 50 mile radius);

  One local government employee from an Evacuation Planning Zone familiar with radiation safety issues;

  A representative familiar with radiation issues from an environmental organization;

  One health physicist;

  One representative of an independent research facility engaged in any aspect of radiological health and safety research;

  One representative from a Department of Nuclear Engineering of an Ohio Institution;

  One Health Department representative from one of the three EPZs; 

  One representative of the nuclear industry not directly employed by a utility.

  A citizen at large, knowledgeable in nuclear power issues, not representing any of the other categories;

  One representative from a public education system within one of the three IPZs who is familiar with nuclear power issues;

  Two student representatives attending an Ohio college or university with background studies including, but not limited to; environmental science, physical science, law, political science, engineering, nuclear power, or life sciences.
