Re: Pressure Buildup in PuBe Sources

I was responsible for removing a very old (1950's) PuBe source from its
external aluminum alloy casing prior to shiping. Upon completing a detailed
investigation concering the casing and potential degredation of the source
itself, pressure build up was not noted as a concern. The investigation
included numerous conversations with the manufacturer and "Old Timers" who
were present when the casing was initially installed.

This particular PuBe source was encased in a strong tight aluminun alloy
casing. Of course, we were extremely concerned with potential loose surface
contamination as the source was removed. After 40 years, no significant loose
surface contamination was detected nor did we experience any indication of any
pressure build up as the source material was removed from its external casing.

If the casing was not properly sealed, I would think that we would have
detected external contamination on external surfaces as well as on the storage
container internals during routine source leak testing applications.
