Jury Finds Against Nuclear Plant

PITTSBURGH (AP) - A federal jury on Thursday found two former
owners of a nuclear fuel processing plant negligent on 19
out of 20 counts in a class-action lawsuit filed by cancer patients
and their families who lived nearby.

Atlantic Richfield Co. was found negligent on nine out of 10 counts
related to the former Nuclear Materials and Equipment
Corp. that operated in Apollo, Armstrong County, from 1957 to
1986. Babcock and Wilcox Co. was found negligent on all
10 counts it faced.

The jury, which deliberated for nine days before reaching its verdict,
levied actual damages against the companies of about
$52.6 million. Punitive damages will be determined next week.

The plaintiffs had claimed they were sickened by uranium particles
emitted by the plant.

Atlantic Richfield Co. was cleared of one count related to a plaintiff
who was born after it no longer owned the plant.
