Re: E-PERM evaluation

The State of Idaho INEEL Oversight Program has been using the E-PERM electret ionization chambers from Rad Elec Inc for environmental monitoring of gamma (and x ray) on and around the INEEL for the past year or so. We've compared results of the quarterly cumulative exposure response of the electret ionization chambers (EICs) over that time period.

The EIC measurements were compared with High Pressurized Ionization Chambers (HPICs) and with environmental TLDs. According to our cumulative results, the EIC response was slightly more sensitive than the HPICs and more sensitive than the TLDs. Historically, the EICs have "trended" well with respect to the HPICs.

I recommend contacting Kristi McIntire for a more detailed evaluation of the results. Kristi is a graduate student at Oversight who has been comparing EIC response with traditional environmental dosimetry as part of her Masters' thesis. Kristi can be contacted at

A student poster session on her data was given at the National Health Physics Society meeting in Minneapolis. I believe a copy of that presentation is still available.

Through internet I have come to Rad Elec Inc that produces an E-PERM system
which would allow a very easy measurement of alpha contamination, radon,
gamma, tritium, etc ... The system seems to be based on the charges
accumulated in a teflon disk and the measurement of the overall charge thus
developped
Any personnal evaluation would be welcome.
