You are correct that correction factor of 2 in Simons (1956) was for
cellulose filters. Perhaps the references mentioned by Joe Alvarez could
be helpful for other filter types. However, Moore et al in HPJ 65:1, 69-81
is a good study on the effects of a number of variables on the detection of
alpha particles. The variables studied included filter burial, mass
loading, particle size, source-detector gap size, and the size of detector
relative to the collection area of the filter.
