Originally, a "pig" was the lead or steel ingot or block poured from 
a smelting furnace. Hence, pig iron, a preliminary product in the 
steel-making process. "Pig" also applies to the mold into which it 
is poured. Typically, a pig was oblong/cylindrical, and looked an 
awful lot like the "pig" we are used to placing detectors in.

Anyone out there know where the word 'pig' came from in conjunction with a
shielded container?
