           NRC CHAIRMAN ANNOUNCES ACCEPTANCE OF POST OF
          PRESIDENT OF RENSSELAER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE


     The Honorable Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, Chairman of the Nuclear
Regulatory
Commission, has announced her acceptance of the position of President of
Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute, beginning next July.

     Dr. Jackson will finish out her current NRC term, ending June 30.  She
joined the agency
on May 2, 1995, being named Chairman by the President two months later.

     In a statement to the managers and staff of the NRC, the Chairman
stressed her
determination over the next seven months to continue managing the regulatory
improvements
that are underway with undiminished attention. "I will do my utmost to
ensure that the progress
and achievements that have been made will continue," she declared.

     Dr. Jackson told the staff she was pleased and honored to have been
presented with the
challenge of leading such an outstanding and highly respected university as
Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute, which is located in Troy, New York.
