Energy Dept Considers New Technology - (AIKEN) -- The U-S
Energy Department is considering new technology to process
spent nuclear fuel rods at the Savannah River Site in Aiken. The
goal is to make uranium useless for nuclear weapons. The Energy
Department is taking public input on the matter through February.
Should the agency okay the idea... it could mean 400 new jobs in
Aiken.

Landfill Faces Hurdles - (COLUMBIA) -- North Carolina's plan to
build a low-level nuclear waste dump is still facing hurdles. The
waste site would serve the Southeast Nuclear Compact... which
South Carolina pulled out of three years ago. Governor-elect Jim
Hodges is considering whether the state should
rejoin the compact.

Decommissioning Would Include Storage - (HADDAM) -- Two
companies have submitted bids to store radioactive waste once the
decommissioning of the Connecticut Yankee nuclear power plant is
finished. Spent fuel rods would be stored in giant bins outside the
Haddam plant in a fenced in area. Connecticut Yankee was
permanently shut down a year ago. Decommissioning would cost
at least 400-Million dollars and take
several years.
