WIPP Progress
Radsafers,
The latest TRU progress is that 116 drums of waste for shipment to the
Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) from Los Alamos National Laboratory
were sampled and characterized as radioactive waste only. Sampling and
analyses confirmed that the waste are not mixed and therefore are not
regulated under the Resources Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). The
New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) confirmed this on December 2,
1998. The NMED has issued a revision to the draft hazardous waste
permit for Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). The latest version takes
into account the comments received by NMED during the 90-day comment
period that ended on August 14, 1998.
Public Hearings are scheduled to begin February 22, 1999, in Santa Fe
and March 8 in Carlsbad. They will resume March 15 in Santa Fe, if
necessary. The deadline to register to speak at public hearing is
February 1, 1999. Written comments are due on January 18 at the
following address:
