Carbon 14 and PWR
Carbon 14 and in primary circuit coolant water of PWRs
I am investigating the state of knowledge concerning the origin of Carbon 14
in primary circuit coolant water of pressurised water reactors. I understand
that Carbon 14 arises principally from the neutron activation of naturally
occurring Oxygen17 and Nitrogen 14.
I am trying to find out when Carbon14 was first recognised as a PWR
radioactive waste issue.
Also interest is what can be done to minimise the product of Carbon14 in
primary circuit coolant water of PWRs.
I am particularly interested in the disposal of MODIX resins used to treat
primary coolant. The MODIX resins trapping Carbon14 and the problems this
causes for disposal.
Any help on answering my questions would be most appreciated.
