[Fwd: ] DECODED MESSAGE FROM MS. WYGANT

LICENSE RENEWAL ISSUED BY UTAH

On October 22,1998, the Utah Department of Environmental Quality officially renewed Envirocare’s radioactive materials license. Utah DEQ stated that its “exhaustive review” of the license renewal application “reconfirm[ed] that Envirocare continues to operate safely.” According to the Utah DEQ, “All fears that there may previously have been a compromised licensing process have been put to rest by this extensive relicensing review.” The license renewal involved a public comment/hearing process evaluating numerous comments from across the country, approximately 4,000 pages of documentation and drawings relating to all aspects of cell design and construction, operations, monitoring, and reporting procedures, and took close to three years and over 20,000 work hours to complete. Envirocare is now able to receive a greater portion of “Class A” low-level radioactive waste than was previously possible.

FEDERAL JUDGE ENDS CASE AGAINST OWNER OF ENVIROCARE OF UTAH

Federal Judge David K. Winder ended the federal government case against Envirocare of Utah owner and former president, Khosrow Semnani, on December 15, 1998. The judge stated that he could find no reason to place Mr. Semnani on probation and that that probation might interfere with Mr. Semnani's return to Envirocare. Envirocare of Utah's President, Charles Judd, stated "I am pleased for Mr. Semnani and his family that this matter has finally concluded. Envirocare looks forward to Mr. Semnani being able to return to the company."

NORTHWEST COMPACT REMOVES VOLUME REQUIREMENT

The Northwest Interstate Compact Commission on Low-Level Radioactive Waste Management recently removed a minimum-volume requirement for generators sending waste to Envirocare. This move, which is being implemented in cooperation with business partners, allows access to Envirocare by more universities, research facilities, hospitals, and small generators.
