Turbine closed after water leakage at Lithuanian nuclear plant
VILNIUS, Feb 18 (AFP) - One of four turbines at Lithuania's Ignalina
Nuclear Power Plant has been turned off after a water leakage,
state-owned Lithuanian Energy announced Thursday. Director
General of the nuclear plant Viktor Sevaldin told AFP the turbine
was suspended Wednesday because of a leakage of cold water
from the system. Sevaldin said it was a minor technical problem
which does not fall under international classification of incidents
and had no effect on environmental radiation levels. Ignalina
Nuclear power plant is equiped with Chernobyl type RBMK
reactors. It is the only of its kind kind in the Baltic states and
supplies 70 to 80 percent of Lithuania's electricity supply. The
Chernobyl nuclear power station, in the Ukraine, was the site of
the most serious nuclear accident in history, on April 26, 1986.
