Richardson Opposes Waste Disposal
Friday February 26, 1999 - Governor Praises White House (SALT
LAKE CITY) -- Governor Mike Leavitt says opponents of a plan to
bring nuclear waste to a storage site in Utah may now have an ally
in the Department of Energy. President Clinton's administration
reportedly is considering taking ownership of nuclear waste from
several eastern power plants and leaving the waste in place. A
consortium of power companies wants to move the waste to a
temporary storage site on the Skull Valley Goshute Indian
Reservation. Leavitt has fought vigorously against the plan.
Richardson Opposes Waste Disposal - (WASHINGTON, D.C.) --
Energy Secretary Bill Richardson has thrown a monkey wrench
into Idaho's plans to move nuclear waste out of the state.
Richardson told a senate committee yesterday that it's a bad idea
to put a temporary nuclear waste dump at Yucca Mountain in
southern Nevada. Idaho has an agreement with the Energy
Department to remove radioactive waste now stored at the INEEL.
The waste is supposed to begin moving out in a couple of months.
