Re: Background rad mat'l concentrations in deer
In addition to the routine samples of deer tissue on the Oak Ridge reservation,
they test all the deer that are taken during the limited public hunting there.
Mine passed, but there was a HUGE buck taken with a bow that had to be left
behind. Much to the chagrin of the hunter who bagged it. He wasn't even
allowed to take the rack (probably just a policy decision). He spent the whole
day just looking at it.
As I recall, you are required to provide a liver sample (and it is amazing how
many hunters don't know what the liver is), and they take a bone sample from one
of the legs. These were either counted with NaI or GeLi detectors. You had to
wait about 30 min for the count before you could take the deer away.

Radsafers,
I am trying to find information on the background concentrations of
radionuclides in white-tailed deer. In particular, I'm looking for studies
and/or data that address Cs-137, Sr-90, Tc-99, thorium, uranium, and
transuranics. If anyone has a source for this information, or can point me
in the right direction, I would be most appreciative. I have attached my
direct email address for responses.
Thanks in advance,
Kelly
