STATEMENT OF ENVIROCARE OF UTAH
ON EXTORTION INDICTMENT:
Press Release:
March 24, 1999
Charles Judd, President of Envirocare, said today that the indictment of
Larry Anderson on charges of extortion, mail fraud, tax evasion and
multiple misstatements confirms the position that Envirocare and Mr.
Semnani have taken from the beginning. The indictment centers on
Anderson's extortion of Semnani while Anderson was Director of Utah's
Bureau of Radiation Control.
"I am very happy for Mr. Semnani and his family. This indictment clearly
shows that Mr. Semnani was a victim," said Judd.
The U.S. Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency, the
Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Utah Department of Environmental
Quality have all inspected Envirocare's operations and the company has
passed each inspection and license renewal. During the recent reviews of
Envirocare, the Utah Department of Environmental Quality reviewed the
initial licensing process and stated that Envirocare's license was issued
in full accordance with the law.
"These periodic inspections and their rigorous review show that we operate
a first class operation." Judd said.
Envirocare operates a state-of-the-art low-level radiation disposal
facility in Tooele County. The facility is licensed and monitored by more
than a dozen local, state and federal agencies. The company employs more
than 200 highly trained employees.
