RE: Stats on RAM Shipments

Try the U.S. DOT Hazardous Materials Information System (HMIS) web page:
http://hazmat.dot.gov/hmisframe.htm

It won't tell you the number of packages shipped per year, but it will
give "spill" information, as defined by U.S. DOT (any unintentional
release from a packaging). See 49 CFR 171.15 and 171.16 for reporting
criteria.

In 1998, of 15,302 reported incidents, 30 (less than 2/10 of 1%)
involved radioactive materials, with no reported fatalities or injries,
and $7,000 in property damage. Compred to Flammable liquids 6314
incidents (over 41%) with 13 fatalities, 37 injuries, and almost $26
MILLION in property damage..

BTW, be careful of the 1996 data, it includes 110 fatalities from the
ValuJet crash.

Another link, http://hazmat.dot.gov/hmship.htm, links to a downloadable
self-extracting Adobe *.pdf report on hazardous materials shipments.
Appendix F of that report estimates 2.8 million ANNUAL shipments of
radioactive materials, almost all of which is radiophamaceuticals. The
report estimates almost 300 million total hazardous materials shipments
each year. So radioactive materials is about 9/10 of 1% of the total
shipments.
