Ordnances and Explosives Basics
September 9
This fundamental course is designed to provide an understanding of the
special requirements associated with working on Ordnance and Explosives
(OE) contaminated sites. This course has been taught in conjunction with
numerous Federal, Defense, and base realignment projects. The course
content provides insight to planners, estimators, project managers, and
field operators. It also provides site workers with the essential
"know-how" to avoid possible mishaps associated with unexploded OE. The
instructors meet the qualification requirements set by the US Army.
ISO 14000 EMS September
10
This course will focus on the value of environmental management systems as
a process for exceeding compliance management performance and reducing
cost. The course includes pragmatic implementation aspects such as
improving the bottom line and information management strategies to make ISO
14000 EMS the best tool for Environment and Business and help prepare those
individuals seeking EMS/ISO 14000 certification by the Board of
Environmental Auditor Certifications.
Counterterrorism Crisis Management September
17
Many organizations are establishing "Centers for Counterterrorism" to
address the needs and requirements of virtually every aspect of countering
the threat of terrorism, including full range of weapons of mass
destruction, more traditional high explosives, and cyber-threats to the
national infrastructure. This course is an overview of the various issues
critical to readiness and successful response management of a crisis
resulting from various types of terrorist attack. Through discussions on a
wide range of topics, participants will gain valuable insight into the 1)
issues of determining if a terrorist incident has occurred, 2) the
appropriate channel of communication and coordination of response, 3) the
responsibilities and resources of the various agencies, and 4) the current
technology available to assist in such crisis management. The course is
designed to provide a comprehensive introduction of an increasingly
important topic in our global society.
Business Process Reengineering October 12
This is an instructive session on strategies for preparing and planning a
successful implementation of an environmental safety and health (ESH)
enterprise-wide information management solution, within the context of
critical business process reengineering. At the end of the course,
participants will be able to 1) define the requirements of an
enterprise-wide EHS information technology solution for their organization,
2) be able to do a cost justification, 3) plan a successful implementation,
4) identify and prevent the potential pitfalls of this undertaking, and 5)
maximize on the potential benefits of both the information technology
solution and the business process reengineering.
Radiation Risk Assessment/Risk Management To be
scheduled
An advanced radiation course designed to teach concepts of radiation dose,
risk, and the methods of estimating risks from known doses. Attendees will
learn to establish comprehensive radiation safety risk management programs
within industrial, medical, academic, or governmental programs.
Indoor Air Quality September 30-Oct 1;
December 2-3
The fundamentals of IAQ are covered in the first 2 hours and the rest of
the day is effectively spent on HVAC solutions to mitigate IAQ problems.
This course is for facilities engineers and managers, HVAC technicians and
safety and health professionals. Energy conservation, air calculations,
and instrumentation are included along with strategies on how to conduct an
IAQ/energy audit
Advanced MSDS Management Technologies October 13
Many facilities are seeking a reasonable and effective solution to the
labor-intensive MSDS management tasks. While many technology applications
are being developed, how do we know that these solutions meet OSHA
requirements and are foolproof during crisis? What happens when a system
goes down and what backup systems are necessary? Various MSDS databases are
appearing on the horizon but do they suffice for each facility needs? For
multinational operations, global MSDS management has another dimension of
difficulty to overcome. This course will provide you with the latest
available technology solutions along with requirements features that must
be addressed appropriately to ensure compliance as OSHA determines
satisfactory to meet the intent of the Hazard Communications Standard.
Learn about some of the pitfalls and success stories in trying to comply
with the regulations using the latest in technology application.
Geographic Information Systems
October 14
This is a course designed for any government, corporate, or academic
professional whose organization could benefit from the use of spatial
computer data. A GIS is usually a computer system that organizes,
manipulates, stores, display, etc. geographically referenced information.
Having data organized in such fashion has the benefit of providing visual
image and examining spatial relationships. The applications for a GIS are
limitless. Current GIS technology applications have developed to the point
where uses are becoming prevalent in the most unlikely places, from crisis
management, mineral exploration, forestry, agricultural, to target
marketing research and transportation applications.
Industrial Hygiene/Homogeneous Exposure Groups November
15-16
This is an advanced industrial hygiene course designed to teach you how to
apply risk assessment strategies and Homogeneous Exposure Grouping (HEG) to
develop an exposure assessment and management program. The application of
statistics and the IH management concepts are critical elements of this
course that will ensure your organization and your IH program success.
Exposure assessment strategy using HEGs is quite different for each
industry sector. When applying risk assessment strategies to develop a
sampling plan, it must be supported with risk validation of the homogeneous
exposure groups (HEGs) as well as a defensible justification of the risk
ranking methods and algorithms applied. The statistical application and
discussions will allow you to defend your sampling strategy and worker
exposures from OSHA or other agency requirements. Many algorithms and
calculation spreadsheets developed by the lead instructor will be provided
to the students to take back to their jobs. These include the spreadsheets
and algorithms used in the decision-making process, to adjust for mixture
Vs. pure material, to adjust for dealing with non-ambient temperature
conditions, etc. Software applications and future epidemiological studies
are accounted for in this course. A class exercise on statistical and
computer applications are included. A brief software demonstration to
promote the everyday application of HEGs and risk management principles in
the practice of industrial hygiene is optional at the end of the session.
